Although my dad did take me to see Shirley Muldowney, who was a famous racecar driver; I loved her and really thought about becoming a race car driver. That becomes a great energy to pull from. That vulnerability is important because I think it connects us. You also did a lot of sport as a kid.
Does that physicality add something to your performance and your energy on stage? I think so. If as a kid you get a lot of exercise, there is a discipline that happens as well as building early muscles and getting you really using your breath. Out of selfprotection, I should probably be less open about things but, but I come from a family that is very open about their feelings. Can the dark times help with the creative process?

Or would you say the creative process only becomes necessary because of the dark times? No matter what it is in life that you. Why do you think so many artists and entertainers have so many similar stories of writers and performers suffering from excess or addiction? But of course, I could be wrong. Does it ever concern you that success could alienate you from people? I love to perform, I love to connect with people, and that makes me feel less alone — but I think you have to be extraordinarily strong to be able to continue to be creative when you are famous.
I think it would kill me as a songwriter. Granted, the film will be split into two, with rumours persisting that this may be the last outing for some of our heroes. Josh Brolin lends his chin to the purple big baddie whose dastardly aims will destroy the universe as we know it. If all the storytelling balls can be kept in the air, this should prove a true summation of all things superheroic.
Many Avengers Assemble! Opens Apr Dir: Eli Roth 18, mins Another phoned-in performance from Bruce Willis adds little to this repugnant remake of the vigilante thriller that starred Charles Bronson. Given the current political climate in the USA, Death Wish is an exceptionally perverse statement, glorifying in gun culture while doing little to critique it. Willis plays a surgeon whose house is burgled while his family make him a birthday cake, leaving his wife dead and his daughter in a coma.

He wants vengeance, so he buys himself a gun. Willis barely bothers to do anything, let alone show a man conflicted at his killing; he seems blatantly disenchanted with being in any film, and has a right to feel that way about this one. Opens Apr 6. Daniel Bruhl and Roasmund Pike star as two German radicals who, together with two Palestinians, find themselves very much out of their depth kidnapping hostages, many of them Israelis. They end up in Uganda, attempting to broker a deal with dictator Idi Amin. The action moves from the plane to an airport compound where the Israel commandos ultimately mount a raid.
Brazilian director Padilha made the excellent Elite Squad and its sequel, and the rather perfunctory Robocop remake. This, however, seems bereft of the tension of his earlier successes. Its attempt to be even handed is laudable but dull and the final raid is blandly staged. Bruhl and Pike are dour throughout and cannot lift the film from its by-the-numbers presentation.
You're almost there...
Simon, played by Nick Robinson, is a gay high school teen who has kept his sexuality a secret from everyone, going out with girls and pretending to be straight. When he discovers through an underground blog that someone else in his school is also gay, he starts to correspond with him.
An email flirtation begins and romance beckons until the emails are leaked. Love, Simon succeeds down to its heart, with a likeable lead in Robinson and great support from his fellow high-schoolers Katherine Langford and Keinyan Lonsdale. Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel are the concerned parents, whose understated scenes hit home.
Love, Simon is worth loving. Dir: Cory Finley 15, 92 mins A Heathers for the 21st century, Thoroughbreds is a deliciously dark twisty-turny psycho-thriller that makes the most of its two young British leads, Olivia Cooke and Anya Taylor-Joy. They engage in a scheme to get rid of him, utilizing a local drug dealer, played by the late Anton Yelchin, who is way out of his depth.
Throughly recommended is Thoroughbreds. Krasinski also directs. Bit like A Monster Calls. In a hurricane. Do things go well? Er, no. Nyman plays Professor Phillip Goodman, a debunker of the supernatural driven to expose hoaxers, thanks to his obsession with a s TV personality who did much the same thing. He is contacted out of the blue by this former hero who believes he may have encountered three cases that cannot be explained.
Whitehouse shines as a jumpy, potentially violent man forced to relive his past, Lawther and Freeman similarly convince as, respectively, a deranged boy troubled by his home life and a slimy anti-Semite plagued by a poltergeist. There are jump scares, but the film succeeds best in its atmosphere of growing dread.
Unsettling and well staged with a great ensemble cast, Ghost Stories follows in a rich vein of British portmanteau found in the Hammer and Amicus films of the 70s. The game of Truth Or Dare takes a nasty turn when those who are lying or refuse to do a dare are bumped off by a supernatural force. A mixture of It Follows and Final Destination results as the gang of youngsters try and find the source of their cursed game, leading them to Mexico. Slickly-made schlock. Continuing his live-action video game streak after Jumanji, Dwayne Johnson takes the lead in this blockbuster based on a moderately successful game from the 80s.
Not much to work with for the many screenwriters, as the game consisted of monstrous creatures fighting armies and reducing cities to rubble, which basically describes the film too. Johnson plays a primatologist whose best friend is a silver gorilla called George, for whom he has cared since a baby.

His gentle giant is transformed into a raging behemoth, growing in size and aggression after a genetic experiment goes wrong; Johnson then has to calm his friend down as he grows to the size of a building and meets other genetic mutations such as a flying wolf and a mega crocodile. More creatures destroying cities then, but at least Johnson provides some sweaty self-deprecating fun. Absolute nonsense but enjoyable popcorn fodder.
Dir: Jason Reitman 15, 94 mins Reteaming for the third time with screenwriter Diablo Cody, director Jason Reitman pulls off another heartfelt offbeat comedy-drama, following Juno and Young Adult. Charlize Theron plays Marlo, stuck in a stale marriage with a behaviourally challenging son, a young daughter and a lazy husband. The birth of her third child brings more problems.
This is the titular Tully played with winning exuberance by Mackenzie Davis. She is a Mary Poppins of sorts, who reawakens Theron, shakes up her marriage and extols the virtues of parenthood.

The film tells two parallel stories — one shot in black-and-white and set in the silent movie era of , the other in , all period detail and flares. Both contain deaf characters who leave their homes and go on a journey which takes them to New York. Millicent Simmonds plays Rose, deaf since birth in , whilst Oakes Fegley plays Ben in , recently struck deaf thanks to a bolt of lightning.
Both seek an absent parent, for Rose her silent-moviestar mother played by Julianne Moore; for Ben his father, whom he has never known, following the death of his mother Michelle Williams. As you do.
