Sometimes they have been retouched, often painting cars in brighter colours. My neighbour when I was a kid had a white XJ with Red leather! The 70s were a decade of dubious tastes — the driver is probably in flairs, tanktop and platforms or a rather large winged suit with wearing a kipper — or all three judging by my pictures of my old man back then! I am and always have been a huge fan ot the estate of any variety having owned such diverse examples as Mini Clubman and VW Passat.
Simple, robust and practical! Estates still have a following for people who like the upright look, which makes them ideal for carrying dogs and furniture. Concerned, Southport. I have lived in Tarleton for 33 years and, along with many other residents, am horrified to find that our Parish Council is apparently supporting this ridiculous proposal.

These councillors are supposed to represent the interests of the resid-. Tarleton has contributed massively in the provision of new housing in recent years. We don't need developments of this size and our councillors need to recognise this or pay the penalty at the ballot box. Rod Frobisher, Tarleton. Louise Bark from Canada is certainly correct Merseyrail went above and beyond to help disabled passenger.
I often travel from Ainsdale to Central Station in Liverpool and am constantly reminded how helpful, obliging and pleasant Merseyrail staff are. Nothing is too much trouble. They are to be commended on their positive attitude and care of passengers.
Thank-you all. C Ainsdale. Somersaulting dandelion clocks arrive, Aerial displays they swirl and dive, Gardeners give chase, fearing more weeds, But the clocks parachute down and take no heed, Every flower has a bright landing strip to share, Beckoning petals welcome each traveller, A fanfare at dusk is lit by dancing fireflies, Closing the show amidst sparkling skies.
Wonderful care at hospital I was recently admitted to Southport hospital unexpectedly and I feel I must tell all adverse critics that my care was wonderful. In this, the 70th year of our NHS, many try to criticise their treatment, but not I. The nurses were extremely busy but never too busy to give a cheery smile and a word of encouragement. While on my back a lot of the time I observed a Romanian nurse, Laura on 11A, who was so gentle yet efficient.
And the food was first class too!. Thank you to everyone! Sandra Nixon, Southport. However, there was no mention of bringing back breast cancer services to these hospitals which should be a priority. I am a patient myself and have to travel to Wigan to use an overstretched service which I find very stressful and not up to the level I had. If there is another hospital to be built surely Skelmersdale would be the obvious site with our excellent access to motorways and our growing population, and would fulfill the promise we were given more than 45 years ago.
Pauline Elstone, West Lancs. Our natural environment is being destroyed In Altcar Lane, Formby, a huge hedge is destroyed on approval from the council alongside a site which was formerly in the green belt. Morrison Homes will build 24 houses on this tiny 0. The two parish councils, Formby Civic Society and many local residents put in lists of objections about its value to wildlife, openness over the green belt its views of the listed Lovelady farm, its traffic and parking problems, its proximity to the sewage works, loss of the hedge and intrusion onto the green belt.
Timetable changes had devastating impact on passengers It was hoped the train timetable change on May 20 would mark the start of a new era for local rail services with thirteen irregular services each day replaced with an hourly timetable that aligned quite well with the Merseyrail services to Liverpool and many connections at Preston.
After a disastrous start Northern introduced an emergency timetable that saw many services operated by a replacement bus and the remaining trains still too frequently delayed and subject to last minute cancellation. Subsequently Northern adjusted the timetable again making almost half of the services bus operated.
The impact on passengers and the service has been devastating and I have taken the matter up with the train operator. So far Northern has said the temporary timetable will run until the end of July but I am not sure they understand the impact of removing so many services like they have.
If this was the Lakes line it would be a national news item. What I can report is that the newly appointed, interim route director for Northern has agreed to review the matter with the timetable planners team and myself. This word is emphasised 14 times. They do admit that it is a Priority Habitat and a wildlife corridor and there is evidence of bats foraging in the 13 mature trees in the hedge.
Our report describes the hedge as an extremely healthy one which supports a huge range of insects including rare species of moths and caterpillars and bees. It goes on to say that many house sparrows were spotted, this species is on the Red List in the UK which means it is globally threatened. Starlings were also in evidence which are also on the Red List. No mention is made of a site visit by members. It would appear that Sefton council have simply accepted the developers report without any appraisal of the site or the hedge which cannot be justified.
How much longer are the people of Formby going to stand by and watch what is left of their natural environment be destroyed? Yvonne Irving, Formby. Chance to dance!
