A number of gay men have told the BBC they are going to extreme lengths to change their bodies - including using steroids and having plastic surgery - just to become "accepted" by others in the LGBT community. Several said pressure from social media platforms and dating apps was exacerbating their body issues.

I would honestly have plastic surgery if I could afford it. Instead of surgery, a few years ago Jakeb turned to anabolic steroids - class C drugs that can be misused to increase muscle mass. It was like there was a harsh voice telling me I'm skinny. Jakeb had his second near-death experience in November last year when - after several years of heavy steroid use - he suffered heart failure.
Months later, Jakeb has stopped taking steroids and has lost the extra muscle he gained, but he continues to have health problems for which he is receiving hospital support. James Brumpton - a software engineer from Lincoln - found himself "catapulted into this world of self-consciousness", after he hooked up with a man at a local gay bar. When James went back to the man's house and took off his T-shirt, his date looked at him and made a disgusted noise. Eventually, the experience led to James deciding to have an abdominoplasty - otherwise known as a tummy tuck. Prof Afshin Mosahebi, of Baaps, says gay men are currently having more cosmetic procedures done than straight men, although he notes that women have more procedures than men overall.
After James's tummy tuck went wrong, he was left with permanent scarring, which made him even more conscious of his body. Dating apps have fuelled body image concerns, he says. Images on social media and in leading gay magazines have also led James to feel he is an "invader in the space".

Nothing worse than sitting there, dropping the toilet roll and watching it roll out the door out of reach!! One oddity The mattress on my bed was a couple of inches shorter than the base so I lost the pillow down the gap, but as there were plenty of pillows and cushions you could stuff one down to fill up the gap. There were a couple of nice fleecy blankets which were essential for me, I used both of them folded double and the excellent house keeping staff immediately caught on and remade the bed with the blankets included the following morning. They even wash up your mug and plate for you too!
Breakfast is served in the bar by the pool, and is what you normally expect in terms of a buffet, except that the 'hot items' were cooked to order so you could get nice freshly made scrambled eggs and bacon that hadn't gone hard from being kept warm The coffee was a bit on the weak side and a bit variable, but when I mentioned this to the guy serving he very promptly made me a proper strong coffee from the proper machine behind the bar. And guess what??

The Wi-Fi code is up on a piece of paper behind the bar, you don't even have to ask for it! You can rent a 'repeater' if you want WiFi in your room, but mine was close enough to the transmitter that I could pick it up in my room. What else?? Well this is a gay complex so nude sunbathing by the pool is the norm rather than the exception, you can wander around the complex stark naked if you wish and no one takes any notice, there are two pools so you don't have to fight for a sunbed, and there is a huge jacuzzi and a sauna cabin too.
I didn't try eating evening meals there but it looked pretty good to me. Top marks all round here I think, not the cheapest place to stay, but worth the price I think.

Only one further comment, the towels are a bit skinny, and a bit on the small side. No room service and as far as I could see not fitness centre, but hey you're on holiday so who wants exercise? Missed my December holiday here due to work commitments!! It's reassuring to read other reviews and find they largely concur! Nothing much has changed from prior reviews except the addition of Willie at the VIP Bar who is a young cut but very good at what he does! The accomodation at VB remains at the same high standard.
We always eat dinner out, but have breakfast and lunch at the poolside along with drinks and the odd bottle or two of Veuve Clicquot!!! The BBQ on Tuesday is a great event, often with entertainment at a very reasonable cost. All I can do now is look forward to my next visit! Stayed again in October for 10 nights and cant believe this place is even better now with the bathrooms having undergone a complete renovation.
New shower units ,modern wash basins and new toilets and flooring. The kitchen and lounge areas have also had a face lift and the old green floor tiles are going to be replaced shortly. The now well established bar and restaurant area is more popular than ever with reasonable prices and a daily changing menu. It is hard to tear yourself away in the evenings as the atmosphere and friendliness of Michael and his team make you very welcome and you don't want to leave. John has done a great job with the changes and Villas Blancas is now truly one of the best Gay Resorts in the world.
